Pulsar PG2000 Generator Review

Trying to find a portable generator for less than $200?  One generator that may fit the bill is the Pulsar PG2000.  The price for this little gas-powered generator ranges between $150 and $300, and when I found it for sale on Amazon.com, it was under $200.  This is not the most popular or bestselling generator on the site, but the reviews were generally favorable, and the features looked exciting, so I decided to go ahead and give it a try.

Power Output and Noise Level

It is easy to get the PG2000 started up; the manual instructions are simple and clear.  The 72cc single cylinder 2-HP air cooled engine seems to work pretty well, but you cannot expect the miraculous of it.  The runtime is pretty good; at half load, you can get around 8.5 hours of use.  The running output is only around 900 watts according to the item description (maximum output is supposedly 1200 watts).  In the title, it says that the machine can produce 2000 watts.

How much did I actually get out of it?  My output was closer to 1400 watts—and a number of customer reviews stated a similar power output.  As a result, you can really only use this generator to run small appliances.  It’s also a bit noisy, so if quiet is a big deal to you, this would not be the best purchase.

Conclusion

The Pulsar PG2000 gas-powered generator is a tempting buy at under $300, and if you find it on sale, you may be able to get it for under $200.  If saving money is your object and you only need a small power source with a relatively low output, the Pulsar PG2000 could be a great purchase.  The unit would be better for a source of backup power or power for events and worksites where noise is not an issue than it would be for camping.  The noise level would be a bit too much at a park, and would likely disturb others, and not make for the most pleasant trip for yourself either.

If you are willing to pay closer to $300, there are a number of other portable generator options you may be interested in which can offer you quieter performance and superior power output.  Check out the Pulsar PG2000, but also have a look at some of the other portable generators we recommend here on our site.
